Trumpet's Milestone Enucleation Surgery

Trumpet arrived at Paws and Claws on June 4 from our shelter partner in Indiana. At first glance, he was considered a relatively “regular maintenance” cat: healthy, friendly, and simply in need of time.

But a closer look changed that.

Our veterinary team became concerned about Trumpet’s eyes: one blue, the other deep brown. While it could have been overlooked as harmless, even endearing, heterochromia, our vet suspected something more serious. After further evaluation, it became clear that Trumpet’s brown eye posed a significant medical risk—with potential for cancer.

The generous giving of our community ensures that when cats like Trumpet need urgent care, we’re ready. Because of this support, we were able to take swift action. On June 26, Dr. Youn performed the first-ever enucleation surgery at the Paws and Claws Cat Adoption Center, removing the eye and giving Trumpet his best chance at a healthy, pain-free life.

This was only possible because our community of donors made sure we had what we needed, not just to shelter Trumpet, but to care for him with urgency, dignity, and compassion.

Having the ability to perform medical procedures beyond spay and neuter is transformational for our organization, and the lives of our rescue cats. It means we don’t have to send cats elsewhere and delay care. It means fewer barriers, less stress, and more lives saved.

As of July 17, Trumpet is fully healed and enjoying life in a loving foster home, patiently waiting for his forever family. His resilience reminds us why we do this work and why your support matters every single day.

Thank you for showing up for cats like Trumpet.
