This is the story of reluctant cat adopters who truly found a perfect fit thanks to foster coordinator Scout. Our family of 4 includes two young kids who were aching to adopt a cat from Paws and Claws - we had been visiting the window, doing cuddle sessions, reading to cats. Finally we decided to foster. That kitty was comfortable with us from day one, Scout picked a good fit. I could tell he'd be happier without young kids in the house so we said goodbye as he was adopted quickly.
The kids tried to convince us we were then ready to adopt. I wasn't feeling quite ready, so when Scout texted that a sweet kitty was available for foster I jumped at it, hoping to satisfy the kids for a little. Scout has such a good read on cats and families, so I was surprised when this guy wouldn't come out of hiding and hissed at each of us. A couple days in, I heard him meowing from under the bed while I worked remotely nearby, so I laid down and put my hand under the bed. He touched my hand with his paw, and then came out from under the bed and let me pet him, and he was so hungry for cuddles! We just lay on the floor and snuggled, and then he spent the next hour in my lap.
I taught the kids how to lie down and make him comfortable, and he warmed right up to them. Every day he got more and more comfortable and now he is just the cutest, snuggliest, happiest cat. Exactly what we were looking for, I can't believe the transformation. He's still warming up to the energy of our house but he knows where he can go to feel safe. We discovered he loves to play fetch, and will alternate equally between our two kids who he brings the toy back to. He's incredible!
Love,
Bridget S.
