First-Ever In-House Surgery Signals New Era of Cat Care at Paws and Claws Cat Rescue

On March 21, Dr. Youn conducted Paws and Claws' first-ever in-house surgery on newly rescued felines. Three male cats were neutered directly at the shelter. Up until this point, every time we had a cat that required a procedure such as spaying or neutering, we had to find volunteers to transport them to a veterinarian over an hour away, which proved to be both costly, time-consuming, and stressful for the cats.

Spaying and neutering are crucial to our rescue mission. These procedures help curb the overpopulation of homeless, unwanted animals, reducing the number of animals euthanized in municipal shelters. Additionally, spaying and neutering can help reduce the risk of certain infections and diseases, as well as unwanted behaviors.

Our first patient was a cat named Norris, rescued on March 16. The name was given in honor of a volunteer who passed away unexpectedly. We felt that dedicating this significant milestone to her memory was the best tribute. We believe she would've been thrilled to see us providing such high-quality care for our felines.

From now on, a veterinarian will be visiting the rescue weekly to perform procedures and check-ups in-house. We expect that most of the procedures will be spays, neuters, wound care, and enucleations. To accommodate our new vet, we've invested in more advanced medical equipment, including a fluid pump and vital monitoring tools. In the future, we'll be able to do dental cleanings, cystotomies, polyp removals, mass removals, and hopefully, amputations.

Having onsite medical care is going to be a game changer for us, allowing us to provide immediate care for all cats and save more needy felines. As we grow and add new exciting elements, so do our expenses. We are in need of the community’s support now more than ever.

Paw Print Club, our monthly donation program, enables the community to support our impactful work. Each time we rescue, treat, and rehome a cat, you can take pride in knowing you've played a part in their journey, making your membership a truly rewarding experience.
